C12 feat. Jole - Judy -Hooked On Coke [C12 Original Line] [76bpm]

Artist: C12 feat. Jole'
Title: Judy-Hooked On Coke
Produced By: Carlos Bess
Style: Spoken word track on a Downtempo groove
Year:1998

Spoken word-trip hop downtempo original version by the kind of beats of wu-tang of fame, Carlos Bess . simply a marvelous song and an amazing array of remixes . The story is that long time KULT Records producer Carlos Bess ‘studio was on the same floor and next to KULT Records’s offices . Needless to say Carlos’s Studio was the hang out spot to blast music after work. While hanging out as always playing music for each other, Carlos played this new song to Lilla who flipped and said “This is the perfect song to do what I want, gimme that nugget”!! And what Miss Lilla wanted was a song that would sit well in every style to execute the first ever KULT remix package from hell…and what better than spoken words with a deep message? Now everyone knows that many diverse remixes are hard to market, but for once, KULT went wild and just had FUN !!! And boy, are we happy!!
This JUDY collection of mixes is all most a journey into the sounds of diverse and opposite faces of underground expressions. A true gem!!!

C12 Featuring Jole' "Judy" Kult Records-Double pack

I PICKED THIS LITTLE GEM UP IN NEW YORK RECENTLY, ITS A DOUBLEPACK WITH A LUDICROUSLY DIVERSE RANGE OF MIXES INCLUDING CEVIN FISHER AND BENJI CANDELARIO-THOUGH THE ONES TO GO FOR ARE BY MONTREAL BOYS. MY FAVE IS TUNNEL LINE, WHICH HAS AN INFECTIOUS FATBACK FEEL TO THE DRUMS WITH A LARGE BASELINE AND THE SPOKEN-WORD VOCALS CUT-UP OVER THE TOP. IT’S TOTALLY ACE. THE MONTREAL BOYS TONI MONTANA LINE ALSO HITS THE SPOT WITH A SLIGHTLY DUBBIER FEEL. ELSEWHERE, CEVIN’S MIX IS A DISAPPOINTMENT WHILST BENJI’S USES A DISCO LOOP UNDER THE TRACK AND WORKS JUST FINE (BUT I’LL BE STICKING TO THE MONTREAL BOYS). ONE OF THE BEST TRACKS OF THE YEAR.

C12 Featuring Jole' "Judy" Kult Records-Double pack

Kult's output just keeps getting weirder, if you ask me, but they sure know how to move a dancefloor. The latest underground release is an interesting double pack remixes, with something to offer everyone. On Side ACTH opening Original Line is a phat downtempo fast conducted by Carlos Bess, with an atmospheric Bit-trip-hop feel to it and full, languorous vocals that tell the maudlin tale of poor Judy and her drug problem. Tobi One's Discotheque Life line is exactly how it sounds, a peppy, ring-a-ling-variety disco filtered and looped interpretation with minimal vocals-vaguely French in sound but not all that compelling. Mark S. turns in a moody, sparsely jazzy drum'n bass mix, the Drum'n Fresh Line, that's surprisingly tasty and useful. Side B sees Cevin Fisher's house-centric Stop Line, a solid bouncy floor-filler with full vocals, lending it a moody, dramatic feel-make no mistake, this one's peak hour treat. The Montreal Boys then follow that up with their pounding Tunnel Line mix, a harder, more progressively-programmed affair that also features the full-on, spoken vocals to dramatic effect, focusing in on the words" sex and coke". The second disc opens with Benji Candelario's Discotheque-No Pimp Line mix, another filtered disco-funk extravaganza that's pretty intriguing in it's layering of loops and percussion, but doesn't really for my personal boat. Jonathan Moore's Drum'n Scary Line is another d & b treatment, rougher tougher than the Mark S. mix, but equally as atmospheric, and the IBIZApella is the"Coke, Sex, Drugs" portion of the vocals, for your remixing fun. The D Side opens with another outstanding mix, Krisco's Bump Mix Line, which is a tribal, runway variety vamp that has a queen vocalist chirping "Miss Judy, girl... hooked on coke, honey", interspersed with a few" it's ovah!" . I can see this one doing VERY well in the big rooms. *****

Fair warning...if you or your club's management/ownership is squeamish about the lyrical content of a record, stop reading this review right now. If the most you've managed to get away with over the years was Grandmaster & Melle Mel's "White Lines", you'll have a lot of trouble programming this phenomenal record. For the rest of us, run(and I mean it)to your retailer and kill anyone who gets in your way while purchasing this double pack from Kult. With mixes from Benji Candelario, Cevin Fisher, Mark S. from Australia and the Montreal Boys from London, your floor is gonna hear this record more than once a night. To provide you with a reference, Jole' sounds like a strung out supermodel with a three pack a day habit. Her voice is guttural and raspy with a lackadaisical attitude not heard since the days Lou Reed's " Walk On The Wild Side". The heart of the production is Jole's monologue/story her friend "Judy was once young and pretty and full of life ". But then she got hooked on drugs and before she knew it "She'd do anything for coke" ..."sex". Yes boys and girls, "Judy" is Nancy Reagan's bad poster child. She simply couldn't "Just" say "No". Big nods go to the Montreal Boys Tunnel Line mix. Of all the mixes, theirs is the darkest, and embodies the raw edge of this record best. Also of special interest is Benji Candelario's Discotech-No Pimp Line mix. His track is a buzz of organs, keyboard, chants and a phat percussion loop that bangs the ears. There is no "Shade of grey" to this single. You'll either love it or hate it. But, if you love it, your gonna love it real hard!!****

because this cautionary tale is spoken-word, the eight remixes are freed from tempo restrictions and come up with nine widely variegated takes(there’s also a three word a acapella: ”Coke, sex, drugs”). Hip hop’s Carlos Bess creates a spooky trip-hop atmosphere. Tobi one serves up classic disco. Jonathan Moore and Mark S. play with the Drum'n' Bass. On the house-music front, Cevin Fisher’s mix is edited to really get the point across, the Montreal Boys play up the sex, DJ Krisco whips upside the head, and Benji Candelario creates a delightful blend of old and new.

the original mix was an 98 Bpm hip-hop record. Now it’s 127bpm and I believe that it’s a peak house record. Check it out your self.

C12 Featuring Jole' "Judy" Kult Records-Double pack

a remixed double pack designed for all the corners of the dancefloor. The dark, sister vocals of Carlos Bess’s original downbeat version warn of the trials and tribulations of said druggy ‘Judy’, Cevin Fisher adds distorted filtering with a Dj enthusiasm, and Tobi One makes light of the situation with classic disco grooves.

C12 Featuring Jole' "Judy" Kult Records-Double pack

"What you got me a "Judy" double pack from Kult and passed on a Mercedes ML320 SUV? Oh thank heavens!" Win friends and influence heads of government without using a single box of Sweet Panatelas when you proffer a Judy double pack. With mixes from producers such as Cevin Fisher, Benji Candelario and Carlos Bess, everyone will want to be your best bud! This glorious double pack kicks off with the "Downtempo Original Line" from Carlos Bess of wu-tang of fame, head member of C12. This laidback "old skool" hip-hop cut is a good one to throw in the mix to add a little leftfield variety. For the truly creative DJ. Tobi-One's "Discotheque Line" mix is goes beyond the en-disco grain for a cut that'll add shine to any set. Twirly and edgy, this is superior disco-influenced house. The "Drum & Fresh Line," courtesy of Mark S. is over five minutes of deep, smooth jazz-tinged jungle with a smidgen of hardness for those who like their drum & bass to be smoky and banging. One of New York's finest producers, Cevin Fisher, serves up a deep tribal house cut with his "Stop Line." The track features the dubby basslines and funkified melodies that Fisher is famous for. A definite must-have. Montreal Boys' progressive cut, called the "Tunnel Line," opens side B and is a dark, apocalyptic affair. The Montreal Boys track takes you to the most inner depths of your psyche and messes with you in your most vulnerable state. For those with a predilection for mind-bending hard house, this is essential. Side C starts with intricate hard house cut by Benji Candelario. Best described as innovative, Candelario's "Discotech -- No Pimp Line" is a perfect peak time record running for eight minutes. With fierce kicks and looped samples that play with your head, Candelario takes his sound into more experimental territory and the results are amazing. Jonathan Moore's "Drum & Scary Line" is for those who like their drum & bass to pack a mean punch. Moore's cut is hard jungle with a profusion of funky minimal bass lines. Hard and heady, this cut is a hard step classic waiting to happen. "Ibizapella (Viva La Vida)" is a hedonist's dream. Just loop and escape! "Krisco's Bump Mix Line" is a tribal feast of mondo proportions. Banging tribally drums pump more than a Chelsea boy on steroids. The additional male vocal adds a fierce dimension to the track, coupled with precipitous dropouts and breaks that permeate. Oh, and the beat is "Ovah" girls! The "Toni Montana Line," heralds the return of the Montreal Boys, who make a return visit with another hard, tribal house affair. With grooves that are fathoms deep, this track oozes overt sex appeal. In an age when everyone tells you to "just say no," Kult implores you to "just say yes!" Suck these babies up and get hooked on "Judy"!
